What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive exfoliating procedure performed individually or in a series for revitalizing and maintaining skin appearance and smoothness. It can be used to address problem areas on the face or body. Microdermabrasion has been used successfully in Europe for years and is now one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in this country. The procedure is performed by our aesthetician and will take approximately 45 minutes. How does it work? A precise stream of very fine crystals is directed through the hand piece onto the skin to loosen the layer of dead skin cells that form on the surface. It then suctions away both the skin debris and the crystals to reveal fresh and invigorated skin. Typically, only the uppermost layer of the skin is removed. This is why there is minimal discomfort and virtually no recuperation. In select cases, however, a more aggressive abrasion may be chosen and appropriate aftercare will be discussed.

What results can I expect?

Patients have been thrilled with the effect microdermabrasion has on:

  • Improving dull or uneven skin color
  • Relieving clogged pores and blackheads (Great for Keratosis Pilaris!)
  • Softening general roughness or thickened patches of dead skin (face, elbows, etc.)
  • Refining the appearance of fine or crepey lines, large pores, acne, and hyperpigmentation
  • Removing surface debris allows the skin to better absorb topical products or medications
  • Increasing circulation for a natural glow
  • Normalizing oily skin
  • Treating scars left from acne, as well as diminishing other types scars
  • Stimulating underlying collagen, producing a "plumping" effect
  • The overall youthful appearance of their skin

However, microdermabrasion cannot remove deep wrinkles, tattoos, or stretch marks. In order to achieve the maximum desired result it is often necessary to have several treatments. A consultation with the doctor, nurse practitioner, or aesthetician will determine an appropriate treatment plan for you.

What will I experience right after my treatment?

Many people notice softer, smoother skin right away. You may have a slight redness to the skin, depending on your sensitivity level and the aggressiveness of the treatment. This is caused by increased blood flow. This blushing may subside in as little as 1-2 hours. More sensitive skin may see the pinkness diminish over the next day or two.
