Chemical Peels PDF Print E-mail

Chemical peels can range from very gentle and non-irritating to very aggressive with heavy peeling. A series of treatments is often necessary to achieve dramatic results. A number of skin conditions may be improved with a proper regimen, including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, mild scarring, sun damage and overall skin uniformity.  We offer a number of different types and kinds of peels, each designed to treat specific concerns.  We recommend a complimentary consultation to discuss your specific needs, goals, expectations, and treatment plan.

Some of the peels available include:
*Glycolic Acid Peels
*Beta Lift Salicylic Acid Peels
*Jessner's Peels
*Lactic Acid Peels

What is a Glycolic Acid Peel?

A glycolic acid peel, often referred to as a chemical peel, is a gentle exfoliating treatment.  Glycolic acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) naturally found in sugarcane.  It works by penetrating the skin*s surface and loosening the top layer of dull, damaged skin cells to leave you with smoother, younger looking skin.  Areas most commonly treated include the face, neck, chest, and hands.  The treatment is performed by our esthetician and will take approximately 30 minutes.

Are Glycolic Peels Right For Everyone?

Most people can benefit from a glycolic peel series.  But sometimes certain skin conditions prevent us from performing this procedure.  Talk with us as we plan your treatment about any of the following:

  • Sensitive Skin
  • Intolerance or Allergies to AHA's
  • Accutane
  • Viral lesions such as Herpes Simplex I
  • Daily Sun Exposure

How Does It Work?

A glycolic acid gel is applied to the skin.  The first peel will be a 30% solution, and will remain on the skin approximately 3-5 minutes.   The peel is then neutralized and thoroughly cleansed to remove any remaining solution.  You will experience a slight stinging sensation while the peel in on, which will subside with the neutralization process.   Moisturizer and sunblock will complete the treatment.

If you tolerate the first treatment well, subsequent peels will last one minute longer, for up to 10 minutes.  If a deeper treatment is desired, a 50% solution will be used, following the same guidelines as the 30%.  You may work up to a 70% solution, which is the strongest.

What Will I Experience Right After My Treatment?

Many people experience brighter, softer skin right away. It is common to look and feel slightly "windburned" after your treatment.  This typically lasts for a few hours, but may subside over the next two days.   Because this is a peel, you can expect some peeling that may range from mild flaking to heavy peeling.  It is important not to pick at the peeling skin!  Over the course of the next week or so, you will see the damaged skin disappear and healthier, smoother, and a more even skin tone emerge!

What Results Can I Expect?

Rejuvenation with Glycolic Peels can lead to :

  • Brighter, softer skin
  • Reduction or lightening of hyperpigmented lesions (brown spots)
  • Stimulating underlying collagen, producing a "plumping" effect
  • Reduction in acneic lesions (pimples, milia, blackheads, whiteheads)
  • Reduction in fine lines
  • Removal of sun-damaged skin
  • Normalizing oily skin
  • Prevention of future acneic lesions
  • Aids in preventing future pre-cancerous lesions
  • Removing surface debris, allowing better penetration of topical products or medications
  • More hydrated skin
  • Healthier, more even color

However, glycolic peels cannot remove deep wrinkles, tattoos, or stretch marks.  In order to achieve the maximum desired result it is often necessary to have several treatments.  During your consultation with your provider a treatment plan that is right for you will be discussed and planned with you.

What Should I Do To Prepare For A Chemical Peel?

The first step is to schedule a consultation with the doctor, nurse practitioner, or esthetician.  They will determine if you are a candidate for a chemical peel, as well as answer any questions that you may have.  If you would like to have your peel immediately following your consultation, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Do not use any harsh exfoliants 48 hours prior to your treatment.  This includes Retin-A or other topical medications, AHA products, or any grainy scrubs.
Avoid sun exposure 1 week before your treatment, and do not plan on sun exposure for long periods of time for one week after your treatment.
You may be red and flaky after your treatment!  When scheduling your appointment, keep in mind if you have any events where you do not want to be peeling!

Each skin type may benefit differently from different types of peels.  Glycolic acid is only one of the several available.  Other kinds include:

Beta Lift Salicylic Acid Peel:    Perfect for reducing oil and breakouts.  Acne prone skin is left clearer, oily skin produces less sebum, pores become unclogged.

Blueberry Jessner's Peel:  Visibly lifts off sundamaged skin!     This triple-acid peel combats hyperpigmentation, clogged pores, thickened skin, and premature aging.  Several days of peeling reveals fresh, glowing, and clearer skin!

And there are many more!  The right type of peel for you will be discussed before your treatment.
