Electrolysis
Electrologists are people who have specialized training in permanent hair removal. At Ormond Beach Dermatology, our electrologist is licensed in the state of Florida and carries the national certifications Certified Clinical Electrologist (CCE) and Certified Medical Electrologist (CME). She is also a member of the Society for Clinical and Medical Hair Removal (SCMHR).
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis a method of permanent hair removal. A tiny, hair-sized probe slides into the hair follicle and uses a current to destroy the hair growth cells so that follicle no longer produces hair.
Is electrolysis permanent?
Yes, after multiple treatments.
Who can have electrolysis?
Everybody is a candidate for electrolysis, male or female, regardless of skin type or color.
How many treatments will I need?
Electrolysis is NOT a one time treatment. The exact number varies from person to person, and cannot be predetermined. Expect to have treatments for a minimum of one year. However, results should be noticeable after the first treatment and improve with each session thereafter.
How long and far apart are the treatments?
That also varies from person to person, depending on the area to be treated. Typically appointments will range from 15 minutes to 1 hour, and the may be spaced once every 4-6 weeks or as close as 1 week apart.
What do I do before my treatment?
When you decide to have electrolysis, stop all waxing, tweezing, and depilatory creams to the area you want treated. You may shave or trim the area if necessary, but stop at least 3 days prior to treatments.
How do I treat my skin after electrolysis?
Use gentle products such as Cetaphil or Dove to wash with and gentle moisturizers. You may also apply an antibiotic ointment or Aquaphor if irritation is present. If the underarms are treated, do not use deodorant for 48 hours after each treatment. Do not go in the sun for 2-3 days after treatments. The treated skin will be very sensitive to the sun.
Does electrolysis hurt?
There is a sensation felt during treatment, typically a very quick warming or a stinging. The intensity of the sensation will vary from person to person.
What are possible side effects of electrolysis?
Side effects can include redness or irritation of the skin, and possible crusting of the treated area for a few days after the treatment. Do not pick at the crusting if it forms; it is there to help the skin heal. You may apply Polysporin or Aquaphor to the area.
A NOTE ABOUT ELECTROLYSIS: Electrolysis is a very slow process. It is a commitment in order to obtain optimal results. It often takes a year or longer to remove all the hair from an area. It is the treatment of choice when the hair is white, blonde, or gray. For darker hair and large areas laser hair removal is a faster, more efficient method. Laser will NOT be effective on white, blonde or gray hairs.
